Spectrum Auctions and Competition in Telecommunications by Gerhard Illing,

Spectrum Auctions and Competition in Telecommunications by Gerhard Illing,
In 2000 and 2001, several European countries carried out auctions for third generation technologies or universal mobile telephone services (UMTS) communication licenses. These "spectrum auctions" inaugurated yet another era in an industry that has already been transformed by a combination of staggering technological innovation and substantial regulatory change. Because of their spectacular but often puzzling outcomes, these spectrum auctions attracted enormous attention and invited new research on the interplay of auctions, industry dynamics, and regulation. This book collects essays on this topic by leading analysts of telecommunications and the European auction experience, all but one presented at a November 2001 CESifo conference; comments and responses are included as well, to preserve some of the controversy and atmosphere of give-and-take at the conference. The essays show the interconnectedness of two important and productive areas of modern economics, auction theory and industrial organization. Because spectrum auctions are embedded in a dynamic interaction of consumers, firms, legislation, and regulation, a multidimensional approach yields important insights. The first essays discuss strategies of stimulating new competition and the complex interplay of the political process, regulation, and competition. The later essays focus on specific spectrum auctions. Combining the empirical data these auctions provide with recent advances in microeconomic theory, they examine questions of auction design and efficiency and convincingly explain the enormous variation of revenues in different auctions.

Auctions: Theory and Practice
Auctions: Theory and Practice
Governments use them to sell everything from oilfields to pollution permits and to privatize companies, consumers rely on them to buy baseball tickets and hotel rooms, and business theorists employ them to explain economic booms and busts. Auctions make up many of the world's most important markets; and this book describes how they have become an important economic force throughout the world. "Auctions: Theory and Practice" begins with a non-technical introduction to auction theory, and emphasizes its practical application. Klemperer discusses the successes and failures of the one-hundred-billion dollar "third-generation" mobile-phone license auctions--he was the principal designer of the first of these, which on its own raised thirty four billion dollars. He demonstrates the unexpected power of auction theory to explain seemingly unnconnected activities such as corporate takeovers, the intensity of different forms of industrial competition, and even stock trading "frenzies." Although there are many extremely successful auction markets, there have also been some notable fiascos, and Klemperer provides many examples. In one, bidders signalled to each other by including lot identification numbers and even phone numbers as the final digits of their bids. In another, the winner bid $7 million but the rules required him to pay only $5,000. In a third, only three bidders turned up for an auction of three licences, so each of them won without even having to bid. Engagingly written, the book will appeal not only to members of graduate courses in auction theory and design but also to anyone interested in auctions and their role in economics.

Reverse auction - A reverse auction (sometimes called a procurement auction or tender) is a type of auction in which the role of the buyer and seller are reversed. In a more typical auction, the seller puts up an item for sale, multiple buyers bid for the item and depending on the nature of the auction (English or Dutch), and one or more of the highest bidders buy the goods at a price determined by the bidding.

Auction Sniping - Auction sniping is the term used to define the process of watching an online auction (such as on eBay), and placing a winning bid at the last possible moment (literally seconds before the end of the auction) giving the other bidders no time to outbid the sniper. Auction sniping is rarely done without software assistance.

Japanese auction - Japanese Auction is similar to English auction, the main difference being that each bidder has to bid at each level to remain in the auction. The auction continues until only one bidder remains.

Vickrey auction - A Vickrey auction is a type of sealed-bid auction, where bidders submit written bids without knowing the bid of the other people in the auction. The highest bidder wins, but the price paid is the second highest bid.
